ATP Synthasome in Cancer Mitochondria

Audience: Researchers | Purpose: Journal Figure & Presentations

This illustration highlights the functional role of the ATP Synthasome in cancer mitochondria, where it forms the ATP Synthasome·VDAC·HK2 megacomplex. This megacomplex is believed to prioritize the delivery of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to the active sites of hexokinase 2 (HK2). HK2 then produces glucose-6-phosphate, a critical precursor for cellular biogenesis, along with excessive lactate—a hallmark of highly glycolytic cancers.
